PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Economic class – Provincial Nominees

In 2021, Canada aims to welcome between 64,000 to 81,500 immigrants through the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). These programs allow participating provinces and territories to nominate eligible economic immigration candidates for Canadian permanent residence.

About Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Except for Quebec, other local provinces have agreements with the Canadian federal government in which they can nominate suitable candidates who wish to live, work and settle down in that particular province or territory to immigrate to Canada. Each Provincial Nominee Program will have specific streams and subcategories with its own set of requirements that will need to be met in order to be nominated to apply for permanent residence. Also, having an in-demand job offer in Canada in a particular province or territory will make it more likely for candidates to receive a nomination and this increases their chances of making their dreams of living and working in Canada come true.

Currently, there are 11 Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) in Canada to choose from, each with
various streams:
1. Alberta Immigration Nominee Program (AINP)
2. British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP)
3. Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)
4. New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (New Brunswick PNP)
5. Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NL PNP)
6. Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program (Northwest Territories PNP)
7. Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program (Nova Scotia PNP)
8. Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
9. Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)
10. Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program (SINP)
11. Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)

How the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) work
When applying for permanent residence through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) under the Canadian immigration system, there are two options for applicants to choose from:
• Apply directly to a province or territory or
• The PNP-Express Entry linked process.

1. Direct application process
The candidates are required to choose the province that they wish to live in and subsequently apply for a nomination. They will have to submit the application directly to the province of their choice.
The province will then consider the application based on its immigration requirements and other criteria. If candidates are nominated by the province, they can then submit their permanent residence application to the federal government.

2. Express Entry linked application process
There are two pathways to take under this process:
Expression of Interest: Candidates can express their interest in a particular province or territory when they create their Express Entry profile. This allows a province to select their profile directly from the Express Entry candidate pool and send them a provincial nomination, provided that they have the skills and experience the province is looking for.

Apply through a Provincial Nominee Express Entry Stream: Almost every province in Canada has an Express Entry stream along with a list of in-demand occupations.
Candidates can check for detailed requirements on each province’s official website.
